There are some great tips you can use to prevent the early feelings of dismay to set in when you are losing a game. Even if you do not plan to play, get to know the rules of the game so that you will enjoy watching it more.

First of all, the tennis court that is being used must be a regulations court. When the overall size and maintenance is observed, then the position of the player has no impact on the overall outcome of the game. There will be a net placed in the middle and two service lines placed in the middle. Next, there is the baseline located at the outer edge of the court, running parallel to the net. The players will position themselves here to start the competition.

The lines that mark the outer edges on both sides, vertical to the net is called the alley. So, what is the difference between singles and doubles? In a singles game, the alley is considered out of bounds and causes a penalty when it is hit. In doubles tennis, hitting the alley is not considered getting a penalty. Therefore, you can see the vast difference just one simple rule change can have to the overall game. You need two players to start the game and either player could serve the ball. In order for a successful serve to occur, you need to serve the ball to the other side and hit the service box.

On the left hand side of the court for each player, there is a small box which is referred to as the service box. You need to hit this box to make a successful serve. All successful serves must hit this service box and bounce off well to be considered valid. Those that do not fulfill this criterion must be repeated.

Upon successful serve, the game escalates into the most exciting part. Now comes the most difficult part, where each player as to hit the ball back and forth until one of them fails to hit it back across. To score a point you must make sure you do not hit the alley and manage to return the ball every time it comes across. Whenever you fail to return the ball, your opponent wins a point.

Every time the balls missed, there will be a need to serve it and each player will take turns to do it. This way both parties will have the serve equally. And that is just a brief explanation of how tennis is being played
