Depression: A draining condition
It is not right that a person should go through their life with depression because it is a draining condition that affects others who are close to the person afflicted; however, this is not a case of a single condition but just an umbrella term for many. Almost all types of this condition are caused by unresolved issues in a person's life; naturally almost anyone can become depressed about certain aspects of their life. The first thing is to recognize there is problem and approach a professional for some help; help will be needed to look back and see what circumstances started the problem.
We can all have periods when we feel very low and there is normally a very good reason for this feeling; a person is not necessarily diagnosed with depression just because they feel this way. The main difference with a depressed person is the level they have reached with whatever is causing the condition; some people feel they are unable to act to correct whatever the problem is, but that is the key element in beating the condition. Many people try to ignore the problems around them hoping they will go away but this usually makes them worse; this can be unhealthy for the mind and body.
Probably the second most common cause is a person's place of work and could be the result of confrontation, stressful work, intimidation or even harassment; it is not uncommon for this condition to result in panic attacks, so outside help is often needed to end the situation. This type of situation can make carrying out normal work duties difficult and will often result in the person taking long term sickness leave; at which point a specialist counselor should be called in to resolve whatever conflict or issues exist. There are times where a person has been prescribed medication for an illness, for example, and a side effect caused by the chemicals in the medication is depression; where side-effects have created these feelings where no real problem exists.
In these circumstances the person's doctor should be made aware of any changes in mood so appropriate action can be taken. One of the biggest problems is where the symptoms of depression do not seem to have any cause that can be discovered; until it is identified, the underlying reason cannot be rectified. The problem can arise when the person cannot see that a certain situation or event for instance, as the cause; if the sufferer does not believe the reason for the condition it is difficult to move forward.
Although around for a long time, it is well known that manic depression or bipolar as it is also known can be hard to diagnose; unfortunately, new studies have found that owing to new overlap theories it can actually take up to five years before a person could be correctly diagnosed as suffering from this condition. Whatever the cause, getting help is the most important thing but the sufferer should be willing to take up responsibility and get the necessary help. Just making that first move can make all the difference and enable the patient to feel as if they are making appositive move towards their treatment; if it is having a detrimental affect on your life then once something positive is done there will be a sense of relief which is the first step to becoming cured.
