Are Vegetarians Healthier?

Whether to become a vegetarian might be something you have been thinking about for some time but do not really know if will change anything for you. Your first question might be whether one additional person can make a noticeable difference. It is true just one person won't make a huge difference but if you multiply this by millions of people who make the choice then the effect becomes much more significant. One argument for making this change are the benefits it has on your health and the problems that an excess of meat causes, like heart disease; this is the most common reason for death in America and other big meat eating nations.

Many of today's heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. According to Earth Save, the average vegetarian has about a quarter of a chance of having a heart attack as the average person. The risk of a heart attack for vegans is even lower with only a one in ten chance of having a heart attack against those of a person who eats meat. A healthy heart is not the only ‘health benefit' to becoming a vegetarian as there are other reasons too.

There is less likelihood of cancer owing to the reduced number of preservatives that will be in your diet compared to a person that regularly eats meat. Hormones used in animal feed are obviously not present either in vegetarian meals, which have proved to create hormone problems in people. Another substance, lactose, is also missing from their diet which has causal links with digestive conditions. Ok so there are obvious health benefits to becoming a vegetarian but it will also mean that many animals will not be harmed either.

In fact the death toll of animals may be far greater than expected with figures in the region of 2,700 eaten by an average American in their lifetime. Even a single person could, in the space of a few decades, save the lives of many hundreds of animals which would have been killed for food. If you were also to give up dairy products and eggs, many battery hens and cows would not need to be used to feed you. After the information you have read here it would be difficult to say no to becoming a vegetarian wouldn't it? This commitment matters to each individual for their health, the health of the planet and those of the animals which will not need to be slaughtered to provide food.
