An irritating skin condition

There is a hot debate on whether eczema is a genetic condition or not but nevertheless, the real cause is still unknown; whilst some believe that external causes are to blame for the condition. This skin complaint causes the sufferer many problems but the constant itchiness must cause considerable irritation plus the skin becomes very red and extremely dry. This dryness can lead to what appears to be a ‘crusty' surface that may exhibit blistering.

The most common type is known generally as atopic eczema; irrespective of the type you have, the most common symptom is itching. However, the itching sensation is much more pronounced, and if a person with atopic eczema scratches their skin, the condition is just exacerbated. People who suffer with this also have to stay clear of many everyday substances because using those makes the condition far worse; as a result, products like detergents, soaps and often cosmetics just inflame the condition.

The situation in small children doesn't look as severe at first as the patchy red skin is not on the skins surface but below it. There are occasions where a person with eczema can have a rash but it is not itchy; in these situations it is not the disorder causing the problem as itching is the one consistent factor with the condition. A similar situation can occur when a person is given eczema treatment for an itchy rash and it helps the itch but the rash remains then the two probably aren't connected.

Because itching is a symptom in many problems related to the skin, including this skin disorder, this is not the basis of diagnosing the condition. Whilst Eczema and a rash always coexist at the same time, the reason the rash itches is still a mystery. Red skin is another symptom of and this is as a result of the increased blood flow in the area.

With eczema, the skin can become inflamed for many reasons because it is already highly sensitive; one area that causes concern is where there is a bacterial infection which can easily be the result of scratching sensitive skin. Most blisters seen as part of the symptoms are quite small but large blisters can also occur; this can be the result either of an infection of the skin or the type of condition you have. This is a situation that needs to be monitored as the blisters contain fluids; blisters are likely to become infected if broken which will just exacerbate the condition further.
